Lined gloves have an inner layer of cashmere, silk, wool or fur that adds warmth and structure. They are the right choice for cold weather and formal occasions. Unlined gloves have no inner layer: they offer a closer, more sensitive fit and are the standard for driving gloves or warm-weather styles. Both types are made from the same quality leathers; the lining is a functional choice, not a mark of quality.

New leather gloves are intentionally cut tight and will soften with wear. The quickest way to break them in is simply to wear them: the natural warmth and moisture of your hands softens the leather within a few wears. You can also apply a small amount of leather conditioner to the outer surface and flex the glove gently by hand. Avoid soaking them in water to speed up the process, as this can damage the leather.

For maximum warmth, choose a lined glove in Nappa or Nubuck leather with a pure cashmere lining. Cashmere offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any natural fibre and sits close to the hand without adding bulk. For extreme cold, styles with a real fur panel on the back of the hand provide additional insulation. Shearling-lined options are also available for the coldest conditions.

Each pair of handmade gloves is cut from a single piece of leather, stitched by hand using techniques unchanged since 1930, and finished individually. This means the seams follow the natural shape of the hand, the leather is selected for consistency and quality, and small imperfections in the hide are avoided rather than hidden. Machine-made gloves are typically cut from multiple pieces and assembled at speed, which affects both fit and longevity.

A correctly fitted leather glove should feel snug across the palm and fingers with no excess material bunching at the joints. The fingertips should reach the end of the finger without pressure. There should be no gap at the base of the fingers when your hand is open. A glove that feels slightly tight when new is fitting correctly: leather relaxes and moulds to the hand with wear. If the glove bags around the fingers or palm at purchase, it is too large.
