Frequently Asked Questions

What makes these gloves sustainable?

Two material choices define the collection. The leather is tanned without chromium compounds, removing heavy metals from the production chain entirely. The cashmere lining, and in several models the outer body, is made from recycled fibres that have already completed a first cycle. The craftsmanship itself is unchanged: every pair is still cut, stitched and finished by hand in Naples.

What is chrome-free tanned leather?

Chrome tanning is the most common process in the leather industry, but it relies on chromium salts classified as heavy metal compounds. Chrome-free tanning achieves comparable softness and durability through alternative chemical processes that eliminate chromium entirely. It is not the same as vegetable tanning, which uses plant-based agents and produces a stiffer, thicker leather. Chrome-free leather has the same supple hand-feel as conventional nappa, with a cleaner production chain.

Is chrome-free leather better for sensitive skin?

Chromium III used in conventional tanning can, over time, convert to chromium VI through exposure to light, heat or humidity. Chromium VI is a known skin sensitiser and a common cause of contact dermatitis from leather products. Chrome-free leather eliminates this risk at the source. For anyone with known skin sensitivity or chromium allergy, chrome-free gloves are the safer choice.

What is eco-cashmere?

The eco-cashmere used in this collection is spun from recycled cashmere fibres. Yarn that has already completed one product cycle is recovered, re-processed and spun again into cashmere that retains its characteristic softness and warmth. This closes the fibre loop and reduces the demand for new raw material.

Why do some models have a cashmere body instead of leather?

Several styles in the collection use eco-cashmere as the main body material, with a chrome-free leather patch reinforcing the palm where grip and daily wear occur. This reverses the usual construction: cashmere provides the warmth and the visible exterior, while leather handles the structural work. The result is a lighter, softer glove with a distinctive texture.

How do I care for chrome-free leather gloves?

The same way as any leather glove. Reshape after each wear, store flat or stuffed with tissue paper, clean with a soft cloth, and condition the leather once or twice a season. Chrome-free leather responds to standard leather care products. Avoid prolonged exposure to water and direct heat.

Where craft meets conscience

The Women's Sustainable collection is Gala Gloves' answer to a straightforward question: what happens when you apply the same Neapolitan hand-craftsmanship to materials chosen for their environmental footprint? Every pair is built in Naples by the same artisans, using the same techniques unchanged since 1930. The difference is in what goes in.

Chrome-free leather: The nappa used in this collection is tanned without chromium compounds, removing heavy metals from the production chain entirely. The resulting leather is soft, supple and ages as gracefully as conventional nappa, without the environmental cost of chrome-based processing.

Eco-cashmere from recycled yarns: The cashmere lining, and in several models the outer body itself, is made from recycled fibres. This closes the material loop: yarn that has already completed one cycle is spun again into a cashmere that retains its softness and warmth.

Two construction approaches: Some models are full leather gloves with eco-cashmere lining. Others reverse the logic: the body is cashmere, with a chrome-free leather patch reinforcing the palm where grip and wear occur. A third group extends a cashmere sleeve from the wrist toward the forearm, creating a hybrid silhouette. All are finished by hand, one pair at a time.
